Democracy plays a crucial role in ensuring Africa's long-term growth and competiveness by promoting equality, good governance, citizens' participation and inclusivity. Democracy affords citizens their right to elect representatives and ensures that the voices of people are heard. Despite these opportunities, democratic governance in Africa has been at the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Corruption, election fraud and ballot stuffing are among the crimes perpetuated by a rising number of youths in Africa. This is underpinned by youth exploitation and lack of participation in democratic processes in many African regimes. Against this back-drop, this UNDP video production unpacks the opportunities and challenges faced by the youth in Africa, with the aim of promoting youth participation in democracy in Africa. The video production is part of a series of documentary films on the Influence Africa platform that profile key leverage areas for increased youth participation in democracy.
